The show must go on

The coronavirus is spreading and Donald Trump is busy counting the days for his potential re-election, but there may not be much of a country left by then. Once again, his mixed messages have forced the individual states to work on their own, each taking their own measures rather than working together to combat the virus. When it comes to a toss-up between science and money, Trump’s priorities are clear.

President Trump in the White House briefing room talking about “Opening Up America Again”. From The New York Times.

According to the latest World Health Organization report, the US has now the highest number of Covid-19 deaths in the world, and it does not look like things are going to stop any time soon. Besides, hearing Trump encourage the country to inject bleach into their bodies or to protest against lockdown measures is not helping much. But that was two weeks ago, and he seems to be over it by now, as yesterday’s White House speech was about a “super duper missile”, rather than about the brutal pandemic that is spreading across the country.

Although he did speak of the virus, he dressed it up with another speech about the military and armed forces, while delusionally comparing fast vaccine development to the Manhattan Project that set out to produce the first nuclear weapons during World War II. Of course, for Trump, power is all that matters. Power and money.

This pandemic is one of the greatest challenges the world has faced since the Second World War, and according to the John Hopkins University (JHU), America has now lost more people to COVID-19 than it has lost in all of its military conflicts since the beginning of the Vietnam War. The United States is the most powerful country in the world, and it shapes the current global economic patterns that lead the rest of the countries. President Trump’s incompetent handling of the pandemic therefore is not only exacerbating the death and destruction caused by the virus in the US, as it is also crippling the worldwide response to the crisis.

Trump’s idea is to create and launch a vaccine to prevent the virus before New Year’s Eve, but is that even possible? His own medical and scientific experts, which he recently qualified as “a terrific group of professionals“, highly doubt it. On the COVID-19 front, the country lacks a basic plan to contain the spread and restart the economy.Meanwhile the first thing in Trumps’s mind is the election, by way of the economy. Trump’s only plan is to have the economy completely open and see some growth again before the forthcoming elections on 5 November, but given the circumstances, how can that be the main goal of any leader? Disappointing, but not surprising.

Today, 16th May, marks exactly one month since the White House released guidelines for a “safe and phased opening of America”, as Trump pointed out yesterday in his speech. Of course, America will not and, in fact, is not tolerating the isolation and confinement measures, as the massive and violent anti-lockdown demonstrations have revealed.

In fact, why should they respect the shutdown measures? Nobody is forcing them to stay home, least of all their powerful leader. In Trump’s country, money and power trump all, and the show must go on.
